Feeding the right diet to your guinea pig is essential for his well-being. At Pet Lovers Centre, our collection of food from reputable brands such as Oxbow and Cunipic will ensure that your pet gets the food he needs to boost his health.
There are various components to a guinea pig’s diet including hay, pellets, fresh vegetables and water – all of which should be consumed at certain desired amounts to achieve a well-balanced diet.
The majority of any guinea pig feed should be high-fibre and low-protein hay as it helps to enhance intestinal health and prevents them from being overweight. A range of hays should be fed due to the varying nutritional benefits and textures, with the exception of alfalfa hay which is high in protein and should only be consumed by growing and pregnant guinea pigs.
As for pellets, it should make up a quarter of your cavy’s diet. This is to ensure that your pet is getting all the right nutrients for his welfare. A good daily estimate would be to feed 1/8 cup of pellets that have been exclusively formulated for guinea pigs. Lastly, fresh vegetables should only be fed occasionally and foods like nuts, seeds or fruit should be avoided as they will lead to indigestion.
