Pet Lovers Centre Bucks the Recession Trend

Reported in New Straits Times, Malaysia (3 February 2009)

The financial crisis has seen many industries reeling in its wake, but according to the major players in the pet industry, it certainly is more recession proof. Reasons for the niche’s resiliency include owners’ emotional attachment to the pet which makes it unlikely for the owner to abandon his pet, but rather, cut back on luxury goods. This trend is certainly seen at retailer Pet Lovers Centre, where managing director Ng Whye Hoe notes that only a slight decline in sales has been observed for pet accessories. There has been general consensus for sustained growth of the industry, though most retailers plan to tread cautiously, and plan for the worse.
