dog teeth

Hi

When i adopted my 10yr old jack russell terrier, his teeth was already in bad shape cos the previous owner did not brush it from young. Now his lower front teeth (except the canines) have all fallen out due to tooth decay and his back teeth(the molars?) is starting to feel shaky.

What should i do? Is there such a thing as dentures for dogs? Main concern is that he won't be able to eat if more teeth starts falling out, but neither do i want to leave the tooth decay alone as it causes him to have really bad breath.

Hi Cheryl,

You pet is considered mature adult. Tooth issues may be seen such as the ones you've observed is common.  This is where tooth brushing and dental prophylaxis is so important to avoid situations that may result to tooth loss.

At this point of time, however, we suggest to have your pet check with your veterinarian for appropriate dental treatment.  Your vet may suggest tooth extractions if necessary.

For the time being,however, we suggest to provide your pet with soft dog food.  Examples are dog dry food soaked with water.  This may help your dog at least consume a proper diet.  Assess too, if tooth brushing is still possible.
