Technically, we may consider the condition of your pet as muscular dystrophy or muscular atrophy. Muscular atrophy can be due to a major pathological causes such as liver diseases, kidney issues, even heart problems or degenerative myelopathy (nervous problems). This would lead to wasting disease or protein breakdown in the muscles with a resultant effect of reduction in muscle mass. This is the reason, why you may observe losing muscle at the back leg area.
Usually for these cases, we suggest to check first with your veterinarian, the underlying causes and treat at once. Second to it, is muscular stimulation such as mild exercises/ walking to strengthen the affected muscle and regain its tone. In relation to supplements, we suggest amino acid supplements coupled with vitamins and minerals, and colostrum that boost the immune system. We further suggest, to maintain the optimum weight of your dog due to muscular atrophy to avoid unwanted joint problems.
