Pls HELP - rashes like spot found on my chinchilla Ear, what should i do?

Dear Vet,

I found rashes like spots on my chinchilla Ear as per attached pictures on the left ear, mild on the right ear.

this does not happen on my other chinchilla

the red spots seems to be spreading & getting worse each week ever since i got from PLC in january. pls kindly advise what's this possible rashes like spots?
whats the cause of it?
what should i do next?
& to prevent it in future?

Hi Kevin,

Thank you very much for your post. 

With regards to your chinchilla's concern, major causes of such problem include fungal skin infections due to relatively high humidity as a risk factor. We suggest to use anti fungal cream topically, monitor closely and if signs persist refer to your veterinarian immediately for appropriate intervention. The causes are tentative and definitive identification can be done through laboratory examinations by your veterinarian.

In the meantime, continue to provide necessary care to your chinchilla, provide good beddings and keep it clean and dry.  Beddings which are left wet and uncleaned are good media for fungus to grow hence may cause skin issues on your pet.

To highlight further, minimize the stress of the part of your chinchilla. They should be kept in a quiet environment. These pets are sensitive to loud noises which may cause stress that relatively brings down their immune competencies. Hence, prone to medical problems, including skin issues.

Can I get this kind of cream from PLC?
Will the chinchilla eat or brush away the cream after application?
Or there's a powder form of anti fungal to use?

Hi Kevin,

Yes there are anti fungal medications that are available. Since the lesion is behind the ears, it is recommended to use gel or cream form to avoid unwanted spills (i.e. dusting in powder forms) in the part of your pet. Just a precaution, as mentioned earlier, this is not in lieu of appropriate veterinary medical examination to have a definitive identification of the cause.

In addition, it is important to follow the recommended amount to be applied. Please carefully monitor your pet and watch for signs of other complications. If signs persist, refer immediately to your veterinarian.

Many thanks... kindly check if the Botanical Tree Tar Cream (OSCAR C) is edible?
i notice small red patches on the hands & feet so i tried to apply this cream but my chinchilla keeps nibbling & licking it away... is this cream edible?

Hi Kevin23sg,

Though it is a natural product, its usage is ideal and limited for topical applications (external) applications only and not for consumption. Often times upon application, licking of the product is unavoidable, this may lead to common signs such as hypersalivation which are self limiting. There are no reported cases of oscar C toxicities upon ingestion, however, cautious application should be observed.
