Hi Rowel, i am building a 2nd floor in the cage for my hamsters, but they seems to be afraid to go up, any advice that can make them roam the whole cage freely? Thanks :-)

Answer
Hi Andy,

Small animals particularly hamsters are naturally curious that they always wanted to explore all angles of their cage for them to totally assure that they are secured and safe in their sorroundings.

Under normal condition going up and down in a certain structure shouldn't be a problem, so if they tend to be hesitant, try to check for some physical discomfort for your hammy. Is he overweigt? does he have pain on his paw or any part of the limbs? If he seems to be "ok" after physical check up then let me share with you some approach on how to encourage him to climb.

Suggested approach:
1) Lower down the flatform up to the level of the bedding for him to easily
go up.
- as he does it successfully for the first time then "gradually adjust" the height up to the desired level with respect to the safety of your pet.

2) Put the food and water in the flatform for him to encourage to go up by the time he felt hungry.

3) Use his favorite treats or use salmon oil to invite him, with his own will to climb on that particular level by the time he smell such a very inviting and convincing odor of the fish in which most of them are very much attracted.

4) A combination of 1, 2, and 3 approach would be more favorable to totally encourage him to freely go up and down in that particular part of the cage.

For more related information try to ask to your pet behaviorist regarding these case or visit and talk to to our Pet Care Consultants in all our PLC outlets.

Cheers and regards,
