Title: How to litter train rabbit?
From: Kuroi Date: 12-May-2010 10:16:07 AM
Type: Answered Question
Hi Trainer,

I have bunny tat is 4weeks old, she is very active and we let her run freely in the house. However, she pees and poos anyhow. We have a litter train at one location of the house along a path that she normally runs past, we left some poop and her urine on the litter train and brought her there very often for her to smell, reminding her to do her business there. But she still pees and poos everywhere, seems like sometimes she intentionally pees outside the room that we closed the door as we din wan her to go in there (room is not rabbit proof yet).

How do I train her? Do I need to put her into the cage and train her in there before I let her run freely within the house? And she is very naughty, the more you'd ask her not to do things, the more she will find opportunity to do it. OMG, now I spent much time clearing her poo and pee, everywhere around the house.

Thanks for your precious time. B Rgds Kuroi

Answer
Hi Kuroi,

Your little pet behavior is an indication that he don't totally understand yet what is litter tray training. Remember that one of the principle in the training concept is to clear-up any shaky reaction in any level of the training stages before you can go up to the next.

Do's and Don'ts
- Never tolerate any negative behavior, if he is doing his business anywhere try to put him back into cage and refresh the toilet training procedure.
- Develop a strong foundation on the stage 1, 2, 3 and soon before you can bring him out of cage.
- Re-orientation of the toilet training program must be done immediately to avoid more complications.

Suggested Training Program:
- Materials needed: Rabbit cage, toilet tray, Play pen, absorbent beddings, enzymatic stain and odor remover, Clean cage spray.
1) Using the "clean cage spray", totally clean-up the cage and all the accessories used inside the cage.
2) Put on the new absorbent beddings enough to cover up the whole cage flat form.
3) Place the toilet tray in one corner of the cage, put in some old beddings which contain some poop into it. The purpose of the said approach is to guide the sense of smell of your pet where to go whenever he's about to do his business.
4) Maintain cleanliness with in the cage by frequently changing the beddings or by spraying the enzymatic odor remover to eliminate traces of urine and poop smell in other part of the cage except the toilet tray which is the designated area.
5) If your pet seems to response to this procedure, by way of gradual introduction, try to increase your pet playing area by using a play pen. This time just open-up the door of the cage so he can get out by himself but remember that toilet tray must be at the same location inside the cage. The only difference is that you add on additional space.
- The purpose of this test is to evaluate his compliance to toilet training that even if you let him roam around the house he could still maintain the expected behavior.

Note: Any shaky performance in any of the training stages must be fixed before going up to the next level.
